Cut to the quick is a reference to the events surrounding Pentecost as recorded in Acts chapter 2.
When the Holy Spirit was poured out and the apostles preached the gospel to the people they were ‘pierced to the heart’ or ‘cut to the quick’ and asked ‘what shall we do?’ It’s a wonderful picture of how the gospel message of Christ is what pierces our hearts and then we respond to that.
